Nicor in the Community

Education

As part of our commitment to the communities we serve, Nicor supports education at every age. We offer free classroom materials, resources and opportunities for scholarships.

Classroom Teaching Materials

Supplement your curriculum or develop an entire unit with teacher-tested, user-friendly materials on natural gas. Explore the areas of natural gas safety, energy sources, energy conservation, transportation, and other topics. Choose from seven packets, including age-specific workbooks and posters for the whole class. The materials are beautifully illustrated and contain a wealth of information and imaginative activities.

We've partnered with the National Energy Foundation (NEF) to produce these free materials, which are designed to meet Illinois Science (Goals 12C, 12E, 13B) and Fine Arts (Goals 25A, 26A-B, 27B) Learning Standards. These materials are available to current K-12 classroom teachers in the Nicor Gas service territory (recognized public and private schools only). Supply is limited, so order now!

To learn more or to order your packet, visit the NEF Web site.

Energy by Design: A Visual Arts Contest for Students

This contest for children grades K-8 will bring out the artist in every child. Teachers can order packets for the whole class. Visit the Energy by Design Web site for contest rules, prizes, important deadlines, and to order your materials.

Energy Web sites for kids

Whether you need help with your homework, a science project, or just want to have fun, check out these Web sites for kids. They're great for teachers, too!

Adventures in Reading with Nicor

Nicor and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) have partnered to foster a life-long love of reading among lower elementary school children in our service territory. The Adventures in Reading program integrates parent, teacher and student learning. "Super Reader," a super hero character, was developed to help motivate and encourage the students to read.

Scholarship America
Community Relations Director Craig Whyte presents a check to the Streamwood Dollars for Scholars chapter.

The Scholarship America national program has awarded more than $1 billion to more than one million students. Nicor Gas helps students realize their educational aspirations by supporting the Dollars for Scholars program, which is part of ScholarshipAmerica. Dollars for Scholars is a network of community-based, volunteer-operated foundations that raise scholarship funds to support local students in their pursuit of higher education. Since 1997, Nicor has granted more than a quarter of a million dollars to help establish more than 150 Dollars for Scholars chapters in Illinois.

ScholarShop, another ScholarshipAmerica program, is a curriculum and resource center for motivating and preparing students in grades 4-12 to achieve their full potential as students and as productive members of society.
