Naperville, IL – Nicor Gas will participate in 50 Fire Department Open Houses (see schedule) across its northern Illinois service territory to help educate the public on natural gas safety. The program will run through October 27, with the majority of open houses to take place during National Fire Prevention Week (October 4 – 10).
Approximately 100 Nicor Gas employees have volunteered to participate in the open houses and will be on hand at each event to answer questions and impart important safety information to customers. “Nicor Gas is committed to ensuring safe and reliable service for our customers, as well as contributing to the well-being of the communities we serve,” said Margi Schiemann, Director of Community Relations for Nicor Gas. “With this in mind, the ongoing partnerships developed with local fire departments and the dedication of our employee volunteers, allow us both to provide an entertaining and informative experience for adults and children to learn about natural gas safety and fire prevention."
At each of the 50 locations, Nicor Gas will display a colorful exhibit of a family home with interactive features that highlight natural gas safety tips. Hands-on activities will allow guests to examine "correct" and "incorrect" appliance connectors to highlight the importance of replacing brass appliance connectors and make participants aware of the smell of a gas leak through a scratch and sniff activity.
Nicor Gas will be giving away free “green” environmentally friendly tote bags to residents at each open house. Fun and informative activities for children include a prize drawing for a Lego® Fire Engine (can be rebuilt into a Fire Rescue Helicopter and Fire Captain’s Off-Roader) after answering a few simple but important questions about natural gas safety.
