Weather and Electric Power Generation May Affect Natural Gas Prices Through Summer Months

Nicor Gas Files for $1.24 May Gas Supply Charge

May 13, 2008
Naperville, IL – Nicor Gas has filed a May gas supply charge (GSC) of $1.24 per therm with the Illinois Commerce Commission, up 25 cents compared to April.  The cost Nicor Gas pays for natural gas is passed through to customers with no mark-up, the company does not make a profit on the cost of natural gas.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), price increase can be attributable to continued cool weather, as heating degree-days were 6 percent higher than normal in April, higher oil prices, and concerns about the adequacy of national storage inventories.  National working gas in storage is at the lowest level for this time of year since 2004.  Uncertainty over electric power sector demand for natural gas during the summer and the possibility of hurricane-related supply disruptions could impact prices in the coming months.

With the increase in commodity cost, Nicor Gas is encouraging customers to explore all the available options to help manage their natural gas bills.  Such options include the Nicor Gas Budget Plan and financial assistant programs like Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Nicor Gas Sharing Program.  The company also encourages customers to utilize the energy efficiency tools located on the Nicor Gas Web site at www.nicorgas.com under “Managing Your Gas Costs.”
