May 29, 2003 Naperville, Ill. -- On May 17 over 400 Nicor Gas employees, their family members and volunteers across the Nicor service territory painted fences, raked leaves and performed a host of other charitable tasks as part of the company's seventh-annual Volunteer Day. Launched in 1997, Volunteer Day celebrates Nicor's year-round commitment to giving back to the communities where Nicor employees work and live.
This year's event drew one of the largest attendance records to date. Nine different volunteer efforts were coordinated and hosted simultaneously in nine different communities. Each event was led by a Nicor Gas employee, who organized and implemented their respective effort with the help of partnering agencies in need of volunteers. Sites included:
- Joliet – Conducted yard work and provided home-safety inspections for seniors in conjunction with a health and safety fair co-sponsored by Senior Services Center of Will County, the Joliet Fire Department, Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center and the Center for Community Concerns of Will County;
- Evanston – Painted classrooms at Family Focus, Inc., an organization that offers prevention programs for junior high and high school students;
- Harvey – Painted, cleaned and planted flowers at the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (CEDA) Harvey Head Start Center and E.J. Morris Childcare Center;
- Naperville – Organized food donations from Nicor's food drive and donations from the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) food drive at the Loaves and Fishes Community Pantry;
- Bellwood – Painted the halls of the Boys & Girls Club of West Cook County with the help of the Bellwood Lions Club and children of Nicor employees who are current and former members of the Bellwood Boys & Girls Club;
- Bloomington-Normal – Helped area seniors conduct exterior spring cleaning with help from W.D. Boyce Boy Scouts of America, Providing Access to Help (P.A.T.H.) and Kiwanis of Bloomington;
- Rockford – Sorted food drive donations from Nicor's food drive and the NALC food drive at the Rock River Valley Pantry;
- Woodstock – Beautified the grounds, by planting flowers and performing general landscaping duties, at the Woodstock Christian Life Services facility and the Adult Child Rehab Center;
- Yorkville – Cleaned the banks of the Fox River in conjunction with the Friends of the Fox and received help from Yorkville High School's environmental club and the City of Yorkville.
