Media Update On Natural Gas Outage in Wilmette and Evanston

January 11, 2003
Naperville, Ill. - Nicor Gas this afternoon is reporting that it is encountering greater difficulty than anticipated in removing the water from its natural gas pipelines as it attempts to restore service to the approximately 200 customers in Wilmette and 1,000 in Evanston who are without natural gas service due to the water main break in Wilmette, which resulted in a disruption to its system yesterday.

The company is working around the clock again tonight and expects to restore service to some homes, but in all likelihood not to the majority of its customers.

The company explained that it had hoped to re-pressurize each area's system all at once. But, due to the water, Nicor must examine each section of the pipeline and restore service one section at a time, which will slow the completion of the project.

Both Wilmette and Evanston will operate its warming centers again tonight. Customers should call Nicor at 1 888 642-6748 for additional information and updates will be provided throughout the night.

Nicor Urges Caution Over Freezing Pipes, Security

Helping Nicor Gas has been a combined force that includes the Wilmette and Evanston police, fire, emergency workers and local government officials. In addition, Nicor has called upon neighboring gas utility Peoples Energy, which has provided workers to the site today. In addition, Tradewinds, a local HVAC contractor owned by Nicor Services is assisting.

Residents are reminded that the cold weather can cause frozen water pipes. Therefore, they are urged to open their faucets to let the water drip.

Also, in circumstances like this, security can become an issue. Nicor reminds customers that only qualified workers are allowed access to their home. These workers include Nicor Gas, Peoples Energy, Tradewinds/Nicor Services and of course local police and fire workers, who will all carry proper identification. If residents have any concerns, they should contact Nicor or their local police department.

Nicor also asks that residents reach out to their neighbors and particularly to call on elderly neighbors to see if they have any needs.

Nicor Gas is one of the nation's largest gas distribution companies. Owned by Nicor, Inc. (NYSE: GAS) a holding company, Nicor Gas has provided safe, reliable natural gas services for more than 45 years. The Company serves two million customers in a service territory that encompasses most of the northern third of Illinois, excluding the city of Chicago.
